Lights, camera, action!

Hello there my fellow space geeks! Its another weekend and my now 6th blog post! I surely must be in it for the long run now surely?!

So what have I been up to this week? Well lots in fact :)

Studying wise I am now coming to the end of Topic 8 and its detailed content on waves!

To my delight it has touched on physics a fair bit (including some maths equations that at first glance look like some new form of language but do in fact make sense if you know what all those letters mean). The last chapter has also hinted at Quantum Physics which up until now I had no idea what it was but now I know I'm fascinated by it!

You see Quantum Physics is all to do about the really really really really small stuff like atoms, nuclei (that's the hub of an atom, a bit like its brain) and all the energy contained within all this really small stuff. Its amazing to think that there are mathematical equations to explain all of this! I'm hoping I come across more of this in the course of my studies as it seems like a really interesting area.

Do you know why it is called Quantum Physics?? Well all those small particles were given a name a long time ago and that name was a quantum. Now that makes sense!

It was also really interesting to find out towards the end of Topic 8 that the theory that light was in fact waves was completely thrown out the window when Einstein declared that in fact light was really small particles.

Try searching "The Photoelectric Effect", now this isn't something that could have happened if light was waves!

This week's adventures have seen me sitting in front of a camera talking about myself. Yes there I was Thursday sat in front of a camera and two members of staff from The Open University talking about me, why I have chosen to study with them and of course blag about my blog!

I'm not sure about you but I discovered that talking about myself wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, I now know I have a tendency to loose track of what I was meant to be talking about halfway through a conversation. So for example whilst giving my reasons for studying my degree, my brain decided to try and get ahead of itself and suss out what to talk about next, of course my mouth couldn't keep up and I found myself suddenly going "blah blah blah". Needless to say more practise is needed!

Anyone else had this problem?!

The edited video will soon be sent to me and is due to go "live" at some point in April. Not sure what I will sound like though as I was still recovering from being ill and my voice unfortunately was unusually squeakier than normal!!

Do you remember me telling you that I'd joined the IOP (Institute of Physics), to my surprise through the post a few days ago i received a membership card, the latest copy of their magazine and a proper certificate declaring my an Associate Member! It isn't one of those cheap looking ones either, has a proper stamp and everything! Yes it is the small things that cheer me up lol.

Yesterday (Saturday) was the KCL Women in Physics Conference 2018 at Kings College London (sponsored by IOP), I must say this was a fantastic event and was made all the more better as I won a prize, picture below. This was won due to me tweeting the most during the conference (I knew it would come in handy at some point). I plan to write a separate blog post on the conference this week to tell you more about it :). In the meantime why not check them out on Twitter https://twitter.com/KCL_WIP

Talking of Twitter, my feed is constantly full of anything space/science related and this link was tweeted by one of those that I follow in the week, its all about Jupiter and its atmospheric bands, an interesting read so why not go check it out?

So what will I be doing this coming week, well another deadline date is looming for TMA04 so that is what i will be concentrating on over the next few days. Question 1 is already half completed however I am sure these TMA's are getting more difficult as they go along...

Then after that its the next iCMA to complete (maths test for those not in the know) and then the most exciting thing of all!! The 21st will see me being able to pick my next modules starting in October! whoop!

I will finally be studying a module that is purely about space and physics (I'll ignore the fact the other is a mathematics one..)

For those of you that remember me mentioning the film "Hidden Figures" there is some exciting news from the makers of Barbie (sorry to the guys reading this!), they are making one of Katherine Johnson! Perhaps if I am famous enough they might make one of me.......

One last link to give you is to an article about something rather exciting happening closer to my hometown, Peterborough Cathedral were announced as the winners to host an event that will showcase Tim Peakes Soyuz spacecraft!! Running from August to November, and as its not all that far from me I have convinced my husband to take me, you cant honestly miss an opportunity like that to get up close and personal with an actual spacecraft!! Check out the link below for more info:

Now I think I have rambled on too much now (even though I could talk all night about anything space related) so I will end this blog post here. Watch out for my second blog this week all about the WIP conference :)

Till next time space geeks
